A decade later this song still rocks hard.

I've been listening to this song every morning since its conception back in 2005. I pour a bowl of corn flakes, have a seat, and allow myself to be swept away by the sheer perfection that is "The Sweet Song". Really a benchmark in musical history. The use of a double low pass filter bypass sweep to brighten the vocals is executed perfectly. Very much ahead of its time. Sometimes my brain turns off while this song plays because of something my doctor calls "music overload". Basically it is the result of listening to four hours worth of awesomeness vacuum sealed into a 3 minute song. Some brains can't process the decibels quickly enough and a stage 5 coma ensues. I am usually fully conscious and aware during these comas, so I like to have the song on repeat so I have something to listen to while I wait for my mom to come visit and find me face down on the ground drowning in a puddle of my own saliva. It's a rough life, but it has to get done.

Anyways, Thank you for producing this.

Everyday for the last decade? Damn son, you is cray.

At first I was like whoa whoa whoa 2spooky4me but then the song progressed and I was like hey 4spooky2her. This is really good. I haven't heard any of your songs since like 2012. You're still cranking out crystal clear tracks (the definition of "cranking out" is 2 per year minimum). Your songs always sound like you mixed them with love - glad to see that hasn't changed :)

Looking forward to browsing through your stuff from the past 3-4 years!

aws, jebbal <3 <3

That other review was meant to be posted on this song haha. Well again, good to see more music from you. Your stuff is sounding reallllly good!

You're still on NG?? Awesome! I don't log in much anymore - It was nice seeing some more music from you. Clean mix, sounds good! :D

When I saw that the song was extended almost 3 full minutes I was a little scared that it wouldn't be able to maintain that same awesomeness all the way through. But whaddya know, nothing to fear here. The additions fit in flawlessly and actually make the song feel more developed and full. 6:06 until the end was absolutely beautiful. What an ending! I had goosebumps the entire time haha. I would give anything to see a full length movie scored by you with this song as the basis. I can only imagine how epic it would be. Become the next Hans Zimmer, okay?

By the way, I like the change you made at 5:38. The strings have more of a sweeping quality to them now. It's satisfying, I like it :)

I'm starting to detect that my family is getting sick of this song, but they'll just have to get used to it until I decide to stop listening to it several times a day haha. Hell, I even added it to my workout playlist this morning. Nothing like great orchestration to help get you through a long run!

Welp, thank you for creating such a masterpiece and sharing it with all of us here on NG for free. I honestly can't wait for your next submission.

NickPerrin responds:

Thank you so much, for this review and your input about the strings in PMs. It definitely helped!

This review is actually really meaningful to me. And it's funny, I do the same thing with music during a workout if I really like it, even if it isn't very workout-y music! Making it more developed and full was exactly the point... plus I didn't have to feel like I was wasting one of the themes that originally only got used once!

More than anything, I'm glad that you enjoy it, and didn't have to pay anything to listen to it either. As for my next submission, I've been toiling on this piece for a long time and will probably be taking a very contrasting break from orchestral music - but it won't be many tracks later that I'll want to get back to the symphonic flavour!

Cheers!

This is one of those rare songs you find on Newgrounds that make you want to simply put your head down and listen. I especially loved the main anthem (prominently at 4:16). It delivers such an epic feeling and sense of adventure. Good music always tells a story, and this song had my imagination running wild. It's got that whole cinematic experience thing going on: The abrupt changes in mood, novel-like structure, creative and modern use of classical instruments... It was awesome :)

I honestly only have one negative thing to mention, and that would be that a few of the note slides in the string section sounded a bit unnatural to me... I don't know. I played violin for 9 years so maybe that's why it caught my attention. Not a big deal, though!

If I told you that I've already listened to this at least 30 times all the way through, it wouldn't be an exaggeration at all haha. Phenomenal job, and congrats on receiving first place in the MAC!

NickPerrin responds:

Hey! Thanks for the killer forum signature, and this AWESOME review! I appreciate you taking the time to do both. However, the fact that you enjoy simply listening to the music, regardless of its affiliation with NG and the contest, means the absolute most to me.

Those note slides... you're definitely right! Sometimes the software doesn't let you get the legato or portamento sounding quite exactly as fast or slow as you want it, and I might have overlooked the ensuing awkwardness. I'm about one day from finishing the full version of this piece (this was abridged for contest length limits), and I'll certainly look into that in my final tweaks. I'd be TOTALLY indebted if you told me where the most "offensive" string slides were, by private message. :)

Now of course, if you've listened to this 30 times the new version might mess with your expectations, but it was always intended to be longer and hopefully you'll like it even more!

Thanks again!

Amazing

Something with the mix sounds a little off to me... I don't know, but that's hardly a complaint because everything else about this song is absolutely perfect. The lyrics and vocals are beautiful. Nostalgic feelings from my memories of playing this classic game mix with your refreshing take on the tune, and it creates something awesome. I'm sure everyone knows what I'm talking about :)

Nice work!

VGSongbird responds:

It's very possible that there's something off in the mix; I just do this out of my bedroom, so the levels or something may be strange.
But I'm glad you enjoyed it regardless ^_^

So niiiice

You two again, huh? Not even sure what to say as far as technicalities... Seems to be pretty much on par with other professional artists. I think there are plenty of reviews coming your way, so I'll just simply let you know that I FREAKIN' LOVE THIS.

The style and attention to detail are refreshing and beyond what most other people on NG can do :) Keep it coming please!

Awesome

Perfectly transcribed notes, and everything else you included fits in amazingly. I especially like the drum work. I'm glad this is in the top 30, it will begin to gain some of the recognition it deserves. Only 3,700 listens? Preposterous!

Keep it up :)

Chill and dirty at the same time!

I heard this on Xmillsa's Youtube page and noticed the NG link in the description. Just thought I'd drop by and give ya a 5!

This is sickkkk :)

durn responds:

w00t! Thanks JebbaL. :D

I've been browsing NG since 2001, finally got around to creating an account in 2005! After that, I pooped.
